Aging and Disability-The Advocacy and Research Agendas

An Interview with Judy Heumann

This interview with Judy Heumann, a disability rights leader and former assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services in the U.S. Department of Education, explores the role of researchers, federal agencies, and disability advocates in responding to the disability needs of the aging population. She argues that the principles of the independent living movement are valid across age groups and that aging and disability advocates need to state clearly and consistently that "we have a right to maintain our social independence, regardless of our age, and we're not going to let go of our independence and dignity."
